inDiablo.de:
Will there be mercenaries which can be hired and can they use a full equipment including amulets, rings, belts, gloves and boots?
Jay Wilson:
Yeah, we call them "Followers" now, but we are bringing them back. We have not announced any kind of information on them, so we are not really talking about them, yet. I can say that they are a big improvement over the Diablo 2 mercenarys. They are definitely a lot more interesting, but we will be revealing something about them at a future time.

#2  08-25-2008, 10:29:47 PM CDT I'm wondering what form they will take. We saw two "followers" in the gameplay trailer, along with Deckard Cain, but they did not demonstrate any level of control or customization. It does appear to demonstrate that you can now have multiple "mercenaries," as it were, but not much else; and it's possible they've created different kinds of followers, ones that are more like mercenaries and ones that just briefly follow you. Hopefully they'll release something about them in October. I'd say the lack of equipment and customization would be a detriment, not an improvement, so more than likely they'll keep some form of customization available.

#6  08-27-2008, 11:09:21 PM CDT I've always been a fan of npc helpers in any game. Glad to see them making a comeback.

The act 2 might merc was the general of my skeleton army, keeping the skeletons in line and only answering to me, the mighty warlord. He was more than happy to impale himself on monsters after he was cursed by iron maiden just to inspire them.

#9  08-29-2008, 02:51:18 PM CDT I really hope they do different levels of mercs, such as
followers1: non customizable, picked up while adventuring, die quickly, you can have several
followers2: hired for money while adventuring, customizable weapons/armor only (d2 style), you can have several
followers3: cheap, purchased in cities, die easily, customizable like d2, you can have 2-6 max depending on level or unique items or something.
Followers4: True mercenaries, fully customizable, you can only have 1, really good and not likely to die, gains levels.

Plus, as in the GP video, non combat NPC's like Cain that can follow you around, perhaps even functionally healers or mages or a support character of some kind.
